THE CONCLUDING CHAPTER OF CRAWFORD

Missed Opportunities
"Toys In The Attic"

Status: Released in 1963. Joan was replaced by Geraldine Page
Character: "Carrie Berniers"
Character Summary: Based on the 1960 stage play of the same title starring Maureen Stapleton and Anne Revere.
Carrie Berniers and her sister, Anna, are spinsters who have been supporting their brother, Julian, throughout his life to the point of causing financial problems for themselves. The sisters become jealous when they discover Julian has recently married.

Joan's involvement in the production: It was reported on September 20, 1960 that Joan was in negotiations to co-star in the film with Dean Martin and Katharine Hepburn. By December 1960, columnist Hedda Hopper reported that Joan had left the production, with either Olivia de Havilland or Vivien Leigh possibly co-starring with Katharine Hepburn and Dean Martin. Why Joan left the film is unknown, being that in early 1961 Joan expressed great interest in the film, saying "I'd like the Maureen Stapleton part in "Toys In The Attic." God, I want it."
