Below is the original script for "Strait-Jacket." The film's original concept was that "Lucy Harbin" is a 32 years old, homely, overweight housewife who finds her husband with another woman and kills the two. She is dubbed "the Fat Goddess" by the press and committed to a mental institution. She is released 20 years later and murders soon ensue by an overweight woman cloaked by shadows.
Actress Joan Blondell was originally hired to portray "Lucy." However, Blondell had an accident which prevented her from performing the role. Joan Crawford was hired to replace Blondell.
The script was modified slightly to accommodate Joan's physical type, with the homely, overweight element of the character changed to what is in depicted in the finished film. The characters, scenes and dialogue remained largely unchanged, with only a few scenes significantly altered from this original script.
